Kauri a new independent Swiss watch brand has introduced a collection of self-winding watches that combine rare woods with steel - an innovation in watchmaking. With plenty of watches with wooden cases already on the market, what makes Kauri watches so special is the combination of 316L stainless, a material widely used in fine watchmaking, a handmade case crafted from rare wood, and a Swiss Made automatic movement.

The vast majority of brands on the watch market using wooden cases do not offer automatic movements, and so far, none offer Swiss movements. With Kauri, the aim is to offer unique, durable watches of exceptional quality that are more than 90 per cent Swiss Made. The rare wood cases, available in a choice of five species, are all made to measure. The stainless-steel watch components are sourced from a specialist Swiss firm based in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Kauri watches have been designed to be authentic, durable and unique. The case and final assembly are made to order according to the customer's taste, creating a timepiece to which no one else can lay claim. The  watches can be further customized by choosing the number to be engraved on the back of the watch, as well as the color of the indices and strap, also made in Geneva.

The first edition is a limited series of just fifty certified Swiss Made pieces. This embodies our desire to present a watch with the most accomplished finish possible. From the very first pencil strokes, our aim has been to create perfect harmony between wood, steel and watch movement. The octagonal design of the exotic wood case highlights the unique character of any of the wood species chosen by the customer.

Kauri commits itself to a fully sustainable approach towards the environment and donates part of its profits to Aquaverde, an association founded in Geneva that works to protect the Amazon rainforest. There are five rare and exotic wood species available to choose from. King wood, which comes from rosewood tree; Briar Burl wood which is typically used by craftsmen to make pipes due to its high resistance to fire; Macassar ebony, the precious wood by definition; Swiss ebony, which is actually a walnut wood from sustainably managed Swiss forests; and of course the Kauri wood, to which the brand name pays homage, is a species 30,000 to 50,000 years old, making it one of the oldest woods in the world.
